Day 2 in Port Stanley

Day 21. Monday, July 14, 2025

We woke at 0715. It was cloudy and cool outside with heavy dew on the boat and you couldn’t see through the window on the dodger due to the condensation. Inside boat weather: temp low 74.5° high 94.1° (in my bag on the beach), current 74.8°. Humidity low 56% high 84% current 72%.

Outside weather: 72° dew .68°, humidity 87%, wind E3, sunset 9:01 PM

We had breakfast of scrambled eggs, onions, and toast about 9:30 AM and then minutes later the rain noticed water on the floor in the head. Phil hadn’t noticed it but checked it out and the anti-vacuum module was unplugged. It is now plugged in and I guess this is a tubing problem. I’m just glad it was easy to get fixed.

After breakfast, I went to the clubhouse with Wi-Fi to work on the blog posts. After a while, my battery was getting low on the iPad so I went back to the boat to get my charger and a bottle of cold water Phil was asleep on the port settee. But 1 o’clock Phil woke and decided that he was going to clean the cock pit and the bow of the boat, but was having trouble finding where to turn on the water faucet on the dock. I did searching with him and we found where to turn it on and also the hose on the dock so we didn’t have to do that with our hose. Their hose was long enough to reach as far as we needed it too. 130pm he was done cleaning the boat and things look much better. Lorraine fixed sham and turkey sandwiches. Lorraine had some Canadian fresh strawberries and Phil had some grapes. Lorraine noted a smell coming from the little potatoes in the food hammock so I took a look at those. One small potato was bad and the rest were washed. The bag was washed and this time put in the refrigerator.

3 PM we left on our bikes, for the IDA pharmacy for calamine lotion. I was hoping to get Caladryl, but they don’t carry that. They did have this medicine in a tube that has ammonia and other ingredients that if you apply immediately after a bite, it’s supposed to really take the sting away. I bought some to give that a try as we fully expect that on one of these passages will have biting flies again.

Then we rode to Stan’s Marina, hoping to get a quart of rotella T oil but they only had the gallon size. We need the quart size container to make it easier to pour into the engine. Next on our list of errands was riding to the Foodland Grocery store. We bought their red grocery bags, which fit great over the handles of the bike and then can rest on the bar from the handle bars to the seat. All this riding around in the heat and humidity made us decide to go to Broderick’s Ice cream store. They have the best ice cream so far. Phil had butter, pecan ice cream and a cone, and I had a scoop of lime, ice cream and Niagara peach in a bowl.

I took a shower early today and felt better. 730pm Tony and then Diane came to the club. Phil showed Tony around the boat inside and when we opened the bilge for the shower sump, there was cloudy water inside that had a strong sour milk smell. we couldn’t get the pump to work, so Tony said he’d come over on Tuesday after 2pm to help. Later in the evening, Phil remembered that there was a switch for the bilge and turning it on made it work. We will work on draining and putting in water to rinse out the yucky water. Lesson learned, keep the sump pump on while we’re on the boat. We learn lots still as it’s still a new to us boat.

Smelly water in the bilge. it’s hard to see.

Finally, we started to get hungry and I cooked sliced zucchini marinated and Paul Newman‘s balsamic vinegar correct and a ham slice on the grill here at the clubhouse then I cooked some broccoli and we had potato salad that I got from Port Dover. Potato salad had really unusual texture. It was kind of mushy and thick, but it still tasted OK. After dinner, we were on our iPads on the outside deck taking advantage of the Wi-Fi until after it was dark. We got back to the boat at 9:55.

Phil went to bed about 1030. I started working on my new sweater. I’m making another Quill top. The main body is going to be ecru and I have this medium Teal looking blue that’s going to be the contrast. It starts from the neck down, I’m not sure if I have enough of the ecru yarn, so will work on the neck ribbing later. I had gotten mixed up with the chart because I’m using opposite colors than what the chart has. I initially started with the dark color square on the chart for blue and the white for the ecru, but it’s opposite. I had to rip out those six or so rows so I could get it the way I wanted. I restarted knitting it to the first increase round and decided it’s time for me to go to bed too.
