Day 4 in Port Stanley

Day 23, July 16, 2025

I woke at 0655. It was cool and dewy again but no complaints here.

Weather:

Inside boat: temp low 70.2°, high 89.2°, current 70.9°

Humidity low 54%, high 85%, current 85%

Outside weather:

Temperature 71°, partly cloudy, dewpoint 70°, humidity 97%, wind ESE 3MPH, sunset 8:59 PM.

I went to the clubhouse deck take advantage of Wi-Fi reading, sub stack, and knitting on my new quilt top. This is the crew main color with blue contrast. I’m doing the color work top and making pretty good progress. I only stayed there about an hour and went back to the boat to find Phil was up and doing his morning exercises. We ate Breakfast at 9:15 AM and I fixed scrambled eggs with onion and tomatoes and cheese and toast which always comes slightly burnt I have a series of pictures to show you how we make toast on the boat since we don’t have room for a toaster, and unless we are tied up till the electricity like we are now, you don’t have the electricity to run a toaster.

Toaster in the case I made when cruising 2013-2015.
Toaster folded up. The screen has been replaced once
Unfolded
Warming up the screen

It usually comes out scorched. Very difficult to get the strength of the burner correct and compress natural gas (GNG) is a hot flame fuel. I usually put butter on to melt. Butter makes everything better right?

It was a slow lazy day. I spent time on clubhouse deck listening to knitting videos and knitting and dozing. Today the train across the river had two excursions with the two passenger cars full of people. One left about 10am for a 10min trial with only 2 extra people aboard, then at 11 am the train left fully loaded and then again at 2pm. Both these trips were about an hour long. Phil and I had done this trip a couple years ago, so didn’t want to go this trip.

I enjoyed talking with my sister, Robin this morning, completing a blog post, hanging out on the boat until we decided to go to Broderick’s for ice cream mid afternoon. After we ate, I checked out the brick building next door and saw that it was a bookstore. The knitting store was gone, but at least I have the yarn I bought. I’m thinking of making the Seaglass sweater with it and other yarn I have in my stash at home.

After home I got a call from my work friend CC and enjoyed talking with her. She going back part time. She sounds so good!!

630pm we went to the club to fix Vigo black beans and rice with brats and Brussel sprouts. It was good and we WP have enough left over for another meal. In my mind, left overs mean I have an easy meal in the bank.

The PSSS had a sailboat race on Wednesday’s leaving on the 630pm bridge and after going around a 3-mark course, returning on the 8pm bridge. Dick and Ruth went out with 6 other boats. Today they had wind so they had a good time. It hasn’t been the case the last few races. Ruth came and we chatted on the deck. Then Ken Holland, in charge of the races and an experienced cruiser came and talked a little with us. Ruth said he went out the St. Lawrence River to the Atlantic Ocean. It’s hard to tell if he’s Phil’s age or a little older or younger. Then we talked with Bob Shuen (? Sp) who owns SV. Excalibur. Then when it was almost dark, we talked with Chelsea and Warren, the young couple who bought the Foster’s previous boat SV Grace C. That boat is a little faster than Dick and Ruth’s current boat which irks Dick. Their 3 kids, a 11yo daughter and 9yo twin boys will be at the sailboat camp next week. The club does this camp every summer.

We went back to the boat at 930pm and Casper for the first time went on the side deck, across the top of the cabin and back through the dodger window. This is a real breakthrough for him. Dick was on his boat with the flashlight out fixing his broken line stopper. I’m not sure what happened, but he fixed it and started to walk home when it started to sprinkle.

It’s predicted to rain tonight so I closed the forehatch and the companionway hatch, but kept the ports open. I figured I’ll wake up if it rains.

The weather still looks good for us to cross the lake Friday to our home port of Fairport Harbor and GRYC. The predicted winds have increased for Thursday so good that we decided to leave Friday.
