Day 1 in Port Stanley

Day 20. Sunday, July 13,2025

After a good night’s sleep, we woke at 0645 and it was cooler. We dressed, fed the cats and decided to go out to breakfast. We put the folding bikes together first as a joint effort. We rode to The Breakfast Place, but they weren’t open until 9 AM. Well, let’s go explore and we rode around and didn’t F hard to go until we saw the art and soul restaurant/gallery. We decided to go in there and shortly there after Sigfried, Denise and Bonnie came in too. We ordered together and then decided to sit together. It got pretty busy while we were there. I hear locals like to eat here.

Art on the wall.
Ann Russel and Bonnie Benson
Siegfried Horn and Phil Dolsen with his omelet
My breakfast ham and cheese quiche and a salad. I also added a chocolate croissant.

Later, Ann Russell joined us who is a local here. I enjoyed finding out about what Bonnie and Siegfried did in their careers before they retired. For the past two years Ann and Don Russell have spent three months starting the end of January in Portugal in the town of Carvoeiro. It’s on the south coast of Portugal . There’s lots to do in that area and they have gone with Karen and Dennis McGinnis. That sounds like an interesting and less expensive option than going to Florida in the winter though not as warm as Florida we exchange numbers and we’ll see what happens in the future. We’d also have to find someone to take care of our cats, cause I’m not sure what it would be like to take them with us or if that would even be allowed. We found out that you could rent beach cabanas at the main beach so after breakfast, we did some riding around. We rode our bikes to Little Beach and there were a few people there. Then rode the new concrete path down and around and got to the main beach. We saw the young man, he looked in his 20s, who was renting the cabanas. They were C$29.99 For the cabana and two lounge chairs from 10 am to 5pm. We purchased the package and then rode back to the boat to change into our swimsuits. We came back to the beach again. They have a handicap accessible path to get to the water, and our cabana was to the left at that. We found that Phil was in the sun so I rode back to the boat and got a twin sheet and clamps and we clamped it on to the side of the cabana and we’re able to both be in the shade. It was pretty windy and they had the yellow flag out when we first arrived. Phil went into the water a couple times and said there was about 3 foot waves coming in It was a yellow flag time which the life guard announced because they were concerned about currents and waves taking people away from the beach. 105 PM we decided to get lunch and rode our bikes to the Buccaneer Bar and Grill. We ate outside because Phil‘s swimsuit was wet and we were afraid to get too cold in the air conditioning. We did sit in the shade and that was helpful. I had their barbecue baby back rib special and Phil had shrimp Alfredo. This restaurant is attached to a hotel which is open all year around. Monday through Friday there are at least expensive rooms are $150 per night Canadian for two people. You can rent the second story hotel suite that has three bedrooms for C$299. I don’t know if it’s less expensive in the winter time or not.

We went back to our cabana and the guy didn’t really like us having the sheet on for the shade so we took it down. I never went in the water because in the shade with the wind blowing it was comfortable, but by 4 PM we decide to go back to the boat and clean up the cock pit.

We joined Diane and Tony who were having their dinner there at the yacht club. Ruth and Dick Foster were there also were having dinner there. Phil and I were still full from our lunch at Buccaneers, but did have a Canadian ear of corn and Canadian butter and it was absolutely delicious. We enjoyed our evening exchanging boating stories. Tony left earlier and then Diane left about 7:30 PM. Ruth went home and then Paul and Hannah arrived. Dick left when it started lightly raining.

It came back about 9:15 PM to make sure that the hatches on his boat moonstruck Cal 33 were closed. Earlier, I showed Ruth our boat and then she showed me her boat. Dick offered for us to wash her clothes at their house which led to a discussion about the price of Hydro in Canada. (electricity for US folks). From 12 to 5 PM thecharge three times the price, in the morning that’s twice the price and then from 7P to seven a it’s the regular price not surprisingly they do their washing and drying after 7 PM at night.

Since I had Wi-Fi, I was working on the Blog post and got one posted and one partial created. We got a text message from Captain Dave that he’s on the Leopard 40 in Huron Ohio and that they’re going to be going to Parry sound in Georgian Bay. This is the boat delivery where the boat was stuck on the Erie canal because of various repairs that the canal needed. We went to bed about 10:30 PM.
