First day in Dunkirk

Day 11, July 3

I woke @ 0745, Phil woke earlier and did his exercises on the new to him yoga mat. The Mainsail halyard was clattering all night in the storm. Phil tied it off this morning. He found that the GFI (breaker) had blown from the lightening in the area. See previous day for the story about the storm. All our instruments and electronics equipment are fine I’m happy to say.

We woke to sunny blue skies.

Temp on the boat ranged from L of 71° and high of 81.5° current temperature is 71.4°

Humidity : low humidity is 52% high with 79%, current humidity 75%

Per Channel 19 weather app T 72°, dewpoint 66°, humidity 80% wind SW 8, Sunset is 8:57 PM.

Phil took a shower this morning. There were sailing lessons for adults on the 2 scouts; One was at the end of our dock. There are a few C&C boats here. There is a medium powder blue 39 docked on our SB side. Then SV Spirit came in and there is and C & C 34 we pass on our way to the clubhouse. We owned a C&C 34 for 40+ years. Vicki was up at the yacht club talking with the members there and I was working on the blog.

1030am, we went to breakfast at Dimitri’s Greek restaurant. Members of the club had recommended Janna’s Cafe on 4th street but that’s a little too far to walk. We ordered 2 scrambled eggs and it looked like 3 eggs. Vicki had Oatmeal and 1eggs. I also had a pancake which was ok

While we were eating breakfast, we saw a Chautauqua County transport bus next to the restaurant, so investigated online about what transportation options were available. turns out they have a red trolly bus that has a different route each Thursday, Friday and Saturday. You are at each stop about 2 hours when 30min to 1 hour is plenty, but they are just getting started. Brett Thomas was the driver and very friendly. They take you to wineries and shopping spots.

Schedule for Thursday

We stopped at 21 Brig winery. I had 6 tastings (1/2 oz each ) then had a glass of white Marquis (2023) and Phil and Vicki shared the flight of dry wine pictured below.

Wines L to R Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon on, Dry Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc

It wasn’t too long that we were done with the tasting. Vicki went to pick sweet cherries and got a bag of them for a little more than $8.00. They were warm from the sun and good tasting. Phil dozed on a chair in the sun. 2 hours after our drop off, we boarded the trolly and went to the Grape Discovery Center.

The Grape Discovery Center was interesting. They talk about Welch grape juice, who it started and the wine growing regions in the part of New York,. They also had grape ice cream for $5/container. It was good and was a nice snack until we had supper.

We stayed here for about 30 min and caught the Trolley to take us home. Bret was great and dropped us off at the yacht club drive. They have different route Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Home at DYC, we met Tony and Sally Zehe on the Catalina 270 SV Tryst. They’ve had some unfortunate luck with their through hull blowing out and nearly sinking. They grounded their boat on the beach just west of Sturgeon Point west of Buffalo. They didn’t know at the time that it was the through hole for the Speedo. The coast guard came with high velocity pumps to pump out the water. They found the through hole and were able to pump it and be towed to Dunkirk Yacht Club by Dale Marine. They also had their transmission break and after they bought a new one, it made noises. So now they are working on that issue. They are nice people from Mentor and belong to Put-I -Bay Yacht Club where they dock their boat for the summer. They are on their way home from the winter in Key West. I hope their luck changes soon.

We came back after our travels and found Bill working on his boat. He had put his mainsail on while it was breezy.

After he was done, we accepted his offer to take us shopping. Phil came along and was able to find a pair of sunglasses that fit over his eyeglasses at CVS. Then we went to Aldi’s and I got most of the items we needed. Phil was teasing that he would watch me to see if it all fit. He didn’t and it did fit 😀.

After we got back from shopping. Supper was a warmed up ham steak, potatoes, and left over vegetables. I had the last of the tortellini salad. Vicki washed the dishes and then went to the yacht club.

Vicki was socializing at the club house and later I joined them.

The middle 2 are Kirk and Sharon in charge of July 4 party.
Good liquor but strong. Phil said it was like the “truth serum” like Phil Waddle had in Port Stanley on a trip years ago.

Phil joined us at the end bringing the Jameson Whisky and Nassau Royale liquor. We had a lot of fun and much laughter. After a little bit of time, we came home and went to bed. Vicki followed, but I was asleep.p so don’t know when she arrived.

  1. Happy Fourth to you too! The cars are staying mostly down below. They sleep a lot. Casper on the chart table seat below the quarter berth and Lucy in the cubby under and outboard the chart table.
