Lay day in Ashtabula

Day 6

June 28, 2025

This morning I wiped down the teak sole (floor) and then brushed the cats. They both ate their wet food, but aren’t eating their dry food as much as at home. I made scrambled eggs with cooked onions and mushrooms with toast for breakfast.

We found out yesterday that there was a beach glass festival on Bridge street starting by the bridge and going up the hill. They block off the street from cars and booths line both sides of the street. Phil rode a bike there and sat on the bike propelling himself with his feet once we were there. His back has been hurting these past few days. Vicky and I walked there. There was lots of jewelry and art there, but not anything that we wanted to bring on the boat. There was kettle corn and a fruit/vegetable stand. I bought 2 tomatoes to slice up for sandwiches. Vicky took some photos below.

Phil and I came back and the boat has been a little cluttered, so we weeded out 1 lifejacket and some reusable bags that went into a tub we got off the boat. Phil found a spot for the life jackets and bags and my sister Robin and her husband Paul drove out and picked them up arriving about 1pm. I’m so glad that I can count on them. We went out to lunch at Beckers Restaurant that was recommended by a woman in Deedee’s Patio Bar and Grill. We thought it served food and it looked like they had some great slabs of ribs in process, but wasn’t what we were looking for. The woman recommended Beckers and it was just the kind of restaurant we were looking for. The food as good. We think that you can’t beat the 55+ specials. We decided to have a bigger meal for lunch and eat light this evening. Afterwards Robin was happy to take us to Walgreens and then Ace Hardware Store on our way back. Phil got his permanent bridge in, but when it broke the jagged edge did a number on his tongue. It’s been so hot, at Deedee’s we both stepped in hot tar, which got on our sandals. We had to take a knife to scrape it off and then used acetone to clean the knife and residue on the bottom of our sandals.

The water from the tanks has been smelling like residual antifreeze, so we turned on the tap to empty the water tanks. We both took naps and when the sound of the water pump started to change, woke up. Then we filled the water tank on the starboard side and the smell is gone.

Vicky took a bike and rode to Walnut Beach looking for an ice cream stand on the way home, but didn’t see one. Seems like we’re always open for a cold treat.

Last night I had met Ann H. and tonight she stopped by about 630pm to check out our Tartan 37. She has one about a year older than ours. It’s always nice to compare boats.

At the dock is the Bum Boat, a converted fishing boat. Here is a video of the music playing. We’ve enjoyed listening to it yesterday from a DJ and tonight from someone live.

After Ann left, Phil and Vicky had cheese and crackers, and grapes. I had a PB&J sandwich and leftover tortellini salad with sweet cherries. I went to Raul’s and bought a bag of ice, getting a ride back on a golf cart from a man who lives and works on his boat in the summer. He has Spectrum Internet set up at his dock.

The internet is non existent at the dock, so I took a shower at the clubhouse and wrote this post taking advantage of the free WiFi they have. The showers are smaller, but nice with plenty of water in a gentle stream. The other advantage is the club has A/C.

Tomorrow we leave for our next Destination east of here. We’ll probably leave early and it will take 7-8 hours to get to our next destination. I’m expecting a motorboat ride and hope that the winds were from the west so that we’ll be going down the waves, which will give us a much smoother ride than going up the waves. We called the marina and have a dock reserved for 2 days, We can have more days if we want it and tell then that tomorrow. I heard that Phil has loaded the folding bikes in the sail locker. We are right next to a pump out station for the black water, but it’s only up to 8 out of 35 gallons, so we’ll see.

If you enjoy the posts and want to get them to your email when they come out, scroll down to the very bottom and enter your email to subscribe. I appreciate your comments and thoughts. I notice that our address is showing up Green Cove Springs, but that isn’t active. I’m still trying to figure out how to edit my pages.
